Answers to Questions about new BE 2006-2007AY Curriculum

1. A new BE curriculum has been approved for the 2006-2007 catalog. Do I follow the program requirements for the year I entered or can I switch to the new 2006-2007 curriculum?

If you started in BE Fall 2006, you are automatically in the 2006-2007 catalog
and follow those requirements and do not need to petition.

If you started BE prior to Fall 2006, you have the option to follow the new 2006-2007 requirements, by filing a petition at 6426BH.

2. If we switch to the new curriculum, do we have to follow the GE list for the 2006-2007 curriculum?

If you change to the 2006-2007 curriculum you are held to all the requirements including the new GE. This GE List can be found at the link below.

http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/ge/GE-EngrNew06-07.pdf

3. The BE students in the 2005-2006 or 2006-2007 catalog, are required an ethics
requirement as part of your general education requirement. If I already took one of the ethics course: Engr 95, 183, 185, do I need to take BE 165?

The eithics requirement can be satisfied by BE 165 (which means you do not need to take Engr 95, 183 or 185). If you have completed Engr 95, 183 or 185 BEFORE W07, you can petition at 6426 Boelter Hall to have one of those courses substitute for BE 165 - that petition will be approved.

4. The new policy stated "For students that petition to change catalogs to follow the 2006-2007 curriculum, the Chem 14 series will be accepted in lieu of the Chem 20/30 series". My questions are: I still have 14D, 14BL, and 14CL left in the Chem 14 series to finish, should I just go ahead and finish the series? Also, there are only 2 labs (14BL and 14CL) in the Chem 14 series, but there are three labs in the Chem 20/30 series requirements, what can I do about that?

Yes, you would finish off the Chem 14 series as the Chem department would not allow you to switch series once you began. Chem 14A, 14B, 14BL, 14C, 14CL, 14D would satisfy
Chem 20A, 20B, 20L, 30A, 30AL, 30B, 30BL. If you petition to follow the new 2006-2007 curriculum, then you can let Jan LaBuda know and she will handle the substituion.

5. Do I need to take ChE101A if I switch to the new BE curriculum since its a co-requisite for BE 110?

BE students following the 2006-2007 catalog, ChE 101A was deleted as a required course. However, ChE 101A is currently listed as a co-requisite for BE 110. The BE department will be going through all the BE courses and making the changes to the requisite to reflect the new curriculum. The Instructor will accept students into BE 110 without requiring the ChE 101A co-requisite. The contents taught in ChE 101A will now be taught in BE 100 and BE 110.

6. Do I need to take both MAE M105A and Chem 110A?

BE students following a catalog PRIOR TO 2006-2007, are only required to take either MAE M105A (same as CH ENGR M105A) OR CHEM 110A since both are Thermodynamics even though both may be listed in your catalog year's Announcement. If you are in a catalog PRIOR to 2006-2007, you can log onto the APP http://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/appinstruct.html to see your curricula requirements.

7 . MAE 20 is currently a pre-requisite for BE 110, If I did not take MAE 20 yet and I just petition to follow the new 06-07 requirements, am I still allowed to take MAE 20 after submitting the petition, or do I take CS 31?

The new catalog requires CS31 so if you did not take the programming class yet, you should take CS 31 instead of MAE 20 since you will be following the 2006-2007 requirements. The Department will be updating the prerequisites accordingly for all BE courses.

8. BE students following the 2006-2007 catalog are required a Technical Breadth area - Refer to "Undergraduate Technical Breadth Areas" at http://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/

- Although there is a notation at the website that Nanotechnology and Technology Management have not yet been officially approved, these courses can be taken by students and will satisfy the TBR for the 2006-2007 catalog.

- For this year, the Tech management courses have no requisites and they can be taken out of order. In the future, students may have to take them in sequence, but I don't think there will be special requisites for engin students. These courses as a sequence can be used to satisfy the TBR.

9 . I noticed that in the summary of technical breadth areas, there is a section called "The Technical Breadth area in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. I have taken ChE M105A and am currently taking ChE 101A. Will both of these courses count toward the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering TBR?

Since ChE 101A and ChE M105A are no longer required for the 2006-2007 curriculum, if you choose Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering as a Technical Breadth Area, then yes, you can use these two courses to apply towards that TBR.

The TBR reads: "The Technical Breadth area in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering is designed to provide students with the opportunity to gain working knowledge of a technical field other than his/her major. Required Upper Division Courses (12 units): At least three courses (12 units) selected from Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering 100 through 187"

10. If I switch to the 2006-2007 curriculum and have already taken CH ENGR 101A and
CH ENGR M105A, will these two courses count towards my Technical Breadth Requirements?

Students who file a petition at 6426BH to change to the new 2006-07 BE catalog requirements AND who have credit for: CH ENGR 101A and CH ENGR M105A which are not required for the 2006-07 catalog, can petition at 6426BH to have those two courses be applied toward the Technical Breadth area in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering or toward the Technical Breadth area in Engineering Science. The department will also consider other courses by petition. http://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/pdfs/TBR10_4_06.pdf
