About Us

The most exciting science in the 21st century is likely to evolve among, not within, traditional disciplines. Around the world, Bioengineering has begun to establish itself as an independent field and engineering discipline, at the boundary between biology and the physical sciences. UCLA and the faculty of bioengineering have embraced this critical and unique opportunity to make a rapid significant impact in the field with an innovative curriculum, state-of-the-art facilities, and cutting-edge research.

The Department administers a top ranked graduate program in biomedical engineering and a hypercompetitive undergraduate program in bioengineering.  The 9 core and 8 joint faculty collaborate with over 70 affiliate faculty throughout the highly interdisciplinary UCLA campus to train over 250 undergraduate and 200 graduate students.  UCLA Bioengineering currently enjoys the strongest student applicant pool int he UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering, which is among the top public engineering schools in the U.S.  The Department also benefits from it’s geographic proximity to the acclaimed UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and the numerous excellent departments in the sciences that make UCLA among the world’s premier universities.

Instead of treating bioengineering as an application of traditional engineering, it will be taught as an applied science discipline in its own right. The bioengineering program is a structured compilation of unique forward looking courses dedicated to producing graduates who are well-grounded in the fundamental sciences and highly proficient in rigorous analytical engineering tools necessary for lifelong success in the wide range of possible bioengineering careers. The faculty is fully dedicated to the mentorship of next generation bioengineers.
