Research Interests

Research in the Teitell lab began with studies on fundamental mechanisms of cancer formation and progression. This led to projects in stem and cancer cell metabolism and the collaborative development of new approaches in cell engineering and diagnostics. Currently active project areas in the group include:

  1. Mechanisms that control B cell differentiation into antibody-secreting plasma cells versus transformation into aggressive B cell leukemias and lymphomas in germinal centers
  1. Studies of a pathway for importing small non-coding RNAs into mitochondria to regulate cell respiration and energy production
  1. Metabolism and mitochondrial function in human pluripotent stem cells, which resembles metabolism in cancer cells
  1. Co-invention of (1) a photothermal nanoblade for delivering large cargo, such as mitochondria or intracellular pathogens, into mammalian cells and (2) a live cell interferometer, for dissecting cellular heterogeneity and profiling cell responses to environmental perturbations (e.g. therapeutics) in real-time

These distinct areas of study converge on the common goal of increased understanding, diagnosis and treatment of human malignancies in the context of changes that arise compared to normal development and function.
