“Patenting Medical Technology”

Patents play a critical role in the development of medical technology. The patent system drives innovation, and for medical technologies in particular, companies, universities, and inventors rely on patents to protect their ideas, often long before their ideas are clinically or commercially proven. This seminar will explain how patents are utilized to protect medical technologies, including what sorts of inventions can and cannot be patented, the basics of the patent process, and what investors are looking for when conducting intellectual property due diligence.

Biography:

Sabing Lee is a partner at the law firm of Knobbe Martens in Orange County, California. His practice encompasses all aspects of intellectual property law, including strategic patent procurement, patent portfolio management, intellectual property due diligence and general counseling on infringement, licensing, international IP protection and post-grant proceedings. Sabing currently represents clients in a wide range of technologies, with an emphasis on medical devices and procedures and materials science.
In the medical device field, Sabing has worked extensively with cardiovascular, orthopedic, wound care and aesthetic technologies. Some of his clients include Edwards Lifesciences (heart valve replacement), Smith + Nephew (negative pressure wound therapy), Össur (prosthetic feet, knees and hands), and Nanospectra (nanoshells for tumor ablation).
Sabing currently serves on the Board of Directors for Octane, an organization that drives technology industry growth and innovation in Southern California by connecting ideas and people with resources and capital. He received his B.S. and M.S. in Materials Engineering from UCLA, and his J.D. from Berkeley Law.
