The Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) at UCLA is honored to receive the national Outstanding Societal Impact Award. This award recognizes a student chapter that has endeavored to highlight and solve a real-world medical problem within its immediate community.

Since 2003, BMES at UCLA has connected students interested in bioengineering and supported them through professional development, community outreach, technical skills development, mentorship, and social opportunities. During the 2024-2025 academic year, BMES launched and expanded several major initiatives. First, we grew our Research and Design teams, which are year-long, student-led projects that prepare members for graduate-level research and careers in the medical device industry. Furthermore, we significantly increased funding for these teams, now supporting 75 students in tackling pressing biomedical challenges and sharing our work at conferences across the U.S.

Another major focus was on advancing inclusive excellence within the BMES at UCLA community. Through our equity, diversity, and inclusion panels with professors and our new BMES Best Buddies program, we fostered a welcoming space for new and old members alike. While this award recognizes our technical excellence and contributions to medical innovation, we also remain committed to strengthening our ties with industry and academia through sponsorships and info sessions, fostering mentorship through engaging events, and giving back to the Los Angeles community through our quarterly Science Days.
