It gives us great pleasure to announce the re-appointment of Prof. Song Li as Chair of the Department of Bioengineering effective July 1, 2021 for a three-year term. Song has been serving as department chair for the last five years.

Song joined the faculty in 2016. Prior to UCLA, he spent 15 years on the faculty of the UC Berkeley College of Engineering. His research interests include cell engineering and mechanobiology, cardiovascular bioengineering, in situ tissue engineering, immunoengineering and theranostic tissue engineering. He is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, the Biomedical Engineering Society and the International Academy of Medical and Biology Engineering.  During his previous term as Chair, Song did an excellent job hiring of new faculty into the department, managed space, physical resources and staff, as well as graduate and undergraduate programs. Most importantly, he was a steady had at the helm throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. To read more about his accomplishments, please check the school’s website https://samueli.ucla.edu/leadership/.

The dean looks forward to a continued partnership with Song in taking the BE department to ever greater heights. She also wants to thank all the faculty in BE for their feedback and constructive engagement regarding this re-appointment and for their hard work and perseverance during this extraordinary time.
